This stduy was carried out at the Sardar Patel Institute of Economic and Social Research, Ahmedabad with finacial assistance from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, New Delhi. This study therefore makes an attempt for a comparative analysis of the export behaviour of foreign collaborated firms and their indigenous counterparts in a number of similar products of selected industries such as engineering, chemicals etc. Findings of the study uncover the shallow empirical base of the Indian policy and help in drawing out some implications for a revision in the policy, particularly on the rationale in the policy, particularly on the rationale of an 'export-first approach' and the framework for controlling multinational collaboration in the Indian context
