Summary: Late in November, 1955, the Government of India decided to undertake some case studies of Labour Management Relations in selected industrial units. The first unit selected for the purpose was the Tata Iron and Steel Company, Jamshedpur. An editorial board consisting of Shri S. C. Joshi, Director of personnel, the Tata Iron and Steel company; Shri Michael John, President, the Tata Workers' Union; and the Director, Labour Bureau, Simla, was constituted by government for directing the study. The work took five weeks to complete. The editorial board wishes to record its high appreciation of the work done by Shri Mathai and Shri Gurbachan Singh in such a short time. Considering the fact that this is the first attempt at a case study of this kind in this country, and that Shri Mathai has been able to evolve a pattern for similar studies in future, his work becomes all the more outstanding.
