McDonaldization, as editor Ritzer first defined it in his The McDonaldization of Society (2004), is the process by which the principles of the fast-food restaurant are coming to dominate more and more sectors of American society as well as the rest of the world. This reader uses this thesis as jumping off point examining most of the basic topics of introductory sociology. Ritzer arranges the 39 chapters into sections addressing basics, studies, applications, and extensions; the McDonaldization of social structures and institutions; cross-cultural analysis, social movements and social change; and the debate over the relationship between McDonaldization and globalization.
