The great financial crisis of the first decade of the 21st century is due in large part to a failure of the common conceptual understanding of financial markets and modern risk management, suggests Westbrook (law, State U. of New York at Buffalo), and until new thinking can replace the old, the crisis will remain badly managed. He urges a rethinking of financial regulation take place that overcomes thinking of markets and government as separate and even antithetical and instead begins to see markets as a way of creating society and doing politics.
