This book shows growth of the economy under the five year plans was slow and erratic. The growth rate of per capita income has been quite distressing up to the fourth plan; it was almost zero during the third plan and below one percent during the fourth plan and onwards fifth plan it has shown continuous increase and reached a reasonably high figure of 4.6 percent during the eight plan and declined to 3.6 percent in the ninth plan.
