Man and Superman is a four-Act drama by Bernard Shaw, written in 1903 to address the question of why Shaw had never written a play based on the Don Juan theme. The plot revolves around John Tanner, a young man with advanced ideas who finds himself surrounded by ordinary people who are slaves to convention. The play aims to show the futility of modern ideas in the social conditions of our civilized state. Tanner's high principles are admired, but readers are pleased when he comes across as a weaker man than the inexperienced and hypocritical Ann, who represents Shaw's view that women often force men to marry them rather than taking the initiative.
