The Apple Cart: A Political Extravaganza is a satirical comedy that revolves around the fictional English monarch, King Magnus, who is assaulted by his elected cabinet. The cabinet threatens to resign if the king doesn't sign an ultimatum, which would strip him of his authority and power. However, King Magnus outwits Prime Minister Proteus and his cabinet, who seek to strip the monarchy of its remaining political influence. The play begins with a political debate, discussing various sides and problems. The play also features an interlude on marriage and adultery, as well as a scene with an American ambassador mocking full democracy and capitalism. King Magnus opposes the corporation "Breakages Limited," which controls politicians and impedes technical progress. The play vituperates that any kind of government, including democracy, autocracy, and monarchy, is making the best of a bad situation and none of them are doing very well. Shaw's astute insight and sparkling wit help expose the unreality of democracy and royalty as idealists conceive them.
