Antony and Cleopatra is a Shakespearean tragedy, first published in 1623. Based on Plutarch's Lives, the story follows Cleopatra and Mark Antony's relationship from the Sicilian revolt to Cleopatra's suicide during the Final War of the Roman Republic. The major antagonist is Octavius Caesar, Antony's fellow triumviri and the first emperor of the Roman Empire. The play is set in Rome and Egypt, with rapid geographical shifts.
